Antidepressants: Choosing the Right One for You

  • Antidepressants

Feeling overwhelmed by all the antidepressant options out there? You're not alone — it's completely normal to feel a bit confused.
With some patience and teamwork between you and your healthcare provider, you can find a medication that fits your needs and actually works for you.

Antidepressants are a popular treatment option for depression. While they don’t cure depression, they can help significantly reduce symptoms.
Sometimes, the first antidepressant you try might be the right fit. But if it doesn’t ease your symptoms or causes bothersome side effects, don’t worry — you might simply need to try another.
This is all part of a very normal process. We’re all different, and what works well for one person might not work for another.
The good news is, there are many types of antidepressants available, and chances are high that you'll find one that works for you.
In some cases, combining medications might even be the best approach.

What Your Healthcare Provider Considers When Choosing an Antidepressant

When deciding which antidepressant might work best for you, your healthcare provider may look at several factors:

Your Symptoms

Depression symptoms vary widely from person to person.
Some antidepressants may target specific symptoms better than others.
For example, if you're struggling with sleep, an antidepressant that has a calming or mildly sedating effect could be a great choice.

Possible Side Effects

Side effects can vary greatly between different medications and individuals.
Common ones include dry mouth, nausea, weight gain, or sexual side effects — and they can sometimes make it tough to stick with treatment.
Be sure to talk with your provider about any side effects that concern you.

Medication Interactions

Certain antidepressants can interact dangerously with other medications.
It’s important to inform your provider about any medications you're taking, even if you’ve been taking them for a long time.

Pregnancy or Breastfeeding

If you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, choosing an antidepressant involves balancing potential risks and benefits.
Generally, the risk of birth defects or other problems is low, but some medications, like paroxetine (Paxil, Pexeva), are typically avoided during pregnancy.
Work closely with your healthcare provider to find the safest way to manage your depression during these important life stages.

Other Health Conditions

Some antidepressants can worsen certain physical or mental health conditions, but others can help manage multiple issues at once.
For example, many antidepressants also relieve symptoms of anxiety.
Bupropion can assist with quitting smoking.
Duloxetine (Cymbalta, Drizalma Sprinkle) can help with chronic pain or fibromyalgia, and amitriptyline is sometimes used to prevent migraines.
